SCHOOL
OF MEDICINE

    General Requirements - Medicine

SAP for students enrolled in the School of Medicine is determined by the promotions committee and is evaluated at the end of each academic year. Student promotion committees meet at least at the end of each academic year and review qualitative and quantitative academic progress of each student. SAP may be evaluated during the course of the year.  Changes in a student’s academic status are communicated to the Financial Aid Office by the Registrar for the School of Medicine.

    • Qualitative Measurements- Medicine

The academic review and accompanying evaluation may include actual grades received, an indication of pass or fail, satisfactory or unsatisfactory, or another form of evaluation.  Grades of P, I, and W are not included in the computation of the grade point average.  A student not satisfactorily completing all course requirements may be permitted to remediate or may be required to repeat an entire academic year of study.  Students that fail the USMLE Step 1 exam are assigned a schedule which deviates from the norm.  Students allowed to remain enrolled after completing remediation, required to repeat an entire academic year of study, or enrolled in a Special Topics class as the result of failing the USMLE Step 1 exam are considered making SAP for financial aid purposes and are eligible for federal student financial aid.

    • Quantitative Measurements - Medicine

All LSUSHC-S coursework and terms are counted in the maximum timeframe allowed, even if financial aid was not awarded during the term that the coursework was taken. Each student must complete the four-year M.D. curriculum in no more than six calendar years after initial enrollment.  The time granted a student for an approved leave of absence would not be included in the maximum time period for completion of the program.

    • Probation – Medicine

Academic probation does not affect financial aid eligibility.

    • Reinstatement of Financial Aid Eligibility – Medicine

The Promotions committees recommend to the Dean the dismissal of students who fail to meet the academic standards for academic progression and graduation.  A student dismissed from the School of Medicine may appeal the dismissal decision to the Dean whose decision is final.  Students allowed tocontinue enrollment in the School of Medicine as the result of an approved appeal is eligible to receive financial aid.
