GEAUX GREEN LSUHSC-S
REDUCE, REUSE AND RECYCLE
LSUHSC-S GREEN COMMITTEE OBJECTIVES
- To implement a culture change throughout the institution by educating our faculty, employees, students and contractors about the positive effects of waste reduction and energy conservation
- Write a Institutional Green Policy and determine measurable goals
- Assist Departments in writing their own area-specific policies
- Solicit suggestions and feedback from our population on how to accomplish our institutional and departmental goals
ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES – Recycling Update - At the end of January, Environmental Services was told by Pratt Industries that the bottom has fallen out of the recyclables market due to the current economy. Currently Pratt is not paying anything for mixed recyclables and they are the only depository in town. EVS has calculated that it would cost approximately $25,000 per year to operate a recycling program at LSUHSC-S. With our current budget crunch and no hope of generating income, the campus wide program has been put on hold.
On a bright note, Auxiliary Services will soon open an office and sundry supply store called the Bookstore Annex in the med school. One objective is for us to locate acceptors for used items like toner cartridges and remove these items from our waste stream. We will become a central campus depository for specified items.
We will continue to promote a green initiative at LSUHSC-S. Please see our GEAUX GREEN website at http://sh-aux.lsuhsc.edu.
With the economy, recycling support in this area has fallen but will hopefully pick back up in the near future.

"The cost for an HP Laserjet toner at ML Bath was listed online for $83. The cost through (Lazer's Edge) was $35 with delivery and install if need, plus pick up of the cores...Previously we were buying (new and recycled cartridges) from ML Bath, until we realized Lazers Edge carried everything too." - Amy Ray, on savings she received using Lazer's Edge.
