Cardiology Fellowship Program

University Hospital

The University Hospital is the major teaching site of the program. It serves as a tertiary care referral center for an area with a population exceeding one million people. Yearly, there are nearly 7,000 admissions to the Medicine Service; 65,000 Emergency Room visits; 30,000 visits to the General Medicine Clinics and nearly 4,000 visits to the Cardiology clinics. This large clinical base is the foundation of a superb “hands on” patient care experience for Cardiovascular Disease fellows.

The 455 bed hospital, which opened in 1953, has had a number of renovations and additions since becoming part of the LSU system in 1976. Two new outpatient clinics were erected in 1985, and allowed older parts of the hospital to be renovated for diagnostic services and specialized care units.

A new ambulatory care building and Allied Health Medicine buildings have opened within the last two years.

The clinical facilities include a 16 bed Medical Intensive Care/Coronary Care Unit, a 60 bed telemetry unit, a sleep laboratory, state of the art cardiac catheterization laboratories. A state of the art Radiology facility including a recently completed imaging center with a 64 slice CT scanner, and a PET scanner is available for enhanced diagnostic capability.
